Hello fellow 3D Artists. The goal of the Modo Open-Source project is to put the Modo community (and the larger 3D community) in a position to acquire Modo from the Foundry and ultimately release Modo as free open-source software.

This goal would be a multi-step process with costs associated with each step. We would need to:

1. Engage Legal Representation to enable a transaction with the Foundry.
2. Acquire the Modo software from the Foundry.
3. Update the latest version of Modo (17.1.v1) with some bug fixes and small features before making it freely available prior to Open-Sourcing.
4. Thoroughly prep the Modo code to be Open Sourced, making sure to remove any licensed code that cannot be Open-Sourced.
5. Release a new version of Modo as Free Open-Source Software.

Each of these steps has costs associated with it and in order to achieve this goal we will need to raise money from the community. This poll is designed to gauge ‘soft’ commitments from the 3D community in order to see if we would have enough funding to make the above goals possible. It’s important for us to have an accurate estimate of the monetary support the community is willing to engage in. The below poll has several donation tiers with a rewards system. A number of Modo Kit developers have graciously made their kits available to donors.

Please be as accurate as possible. Many people have voiced support for this project, but that’s easy to do on a Discord channel or a YouTube comment. In order for this to be successful we will need people to commit to donating money towards this goal. We are also asking for your email so we can both contact you with updates and dissuade people from doing the poll multiple times. We respect your privacy. Your email will only be used for updates/news/communication related to this project. We will never share, sell, or distribute your information to third parties. With that said we appreciate your support and will continue to work hard to achieve our goal of a free, open-source Modo.

The Modo Open Source project is currently being led by Greg Leuenberger (owner of Pixel Fondue) and developers Fredrik Widman, Shawn Frueh, Mario Baldi, Steve Hill, Chris Hague, Yoshiaki Tazaki, Marc Meijer, Charles Wardlaw and Gwynne Reddick. We will be asking for additional help with development, UI/UX, testing and other roles if we are able to acquire Modo.
