Vintage Motorcycle Shading in Modo

Vintage Motorcycle Shading in Modo

This tutorial takes a deep dive into the creation of reusable shaders and materials in Modo. Using a modern PBR workflow the training will show you how to build physically accurate shaders and bring them to life with the addition of subtle details that will help to make them more believable and realistic.

With a focus on the newer Principled shader, the training will cover the metalness workflow and explain how to go about creating believable and physically accurate shaders with the minimum of difficulty. The tutorial takes you through the detailed step-by-step creation of all of the shaders necessary for the vintage motorcycle model, covering several specific types of metal, worn paint, rubber and glass.

The training will show you how to apply measured values to achieve extremely accurate results when recreating specific metals such as nickel that have subtle colouring in their reflections. With modern workflows and Modo's Principled shader this process is now extremely quick and easy, and as the training demonstrates, will allow you to precisely match photo reference very quickly without having to resort to guesswork.

A substantial focus of this tutorial is the creation of small micro-details that only become visible in close-up, these subtle details help to create a sense of tactile realism when the camera zooms into your materials. By learning how to create these almost imperceptible details you will be able to create more realistic and believable shaders.

The shading process is distinct and different to texture-painting: all of the materials that are created in this course are reusable materials that can be applied to any mesh, and for the most part these materials do not rely on UV mapping but use real-world scaling instead. Bespoke texture painting workflows will be covered in a future tutorial, but the focus of this training is on creating reusable materials that you can build into a material library.

So bring your shading skills up to date with Vintage Motorcycle Shading in Modo.
